This essay is about competing readings of Nikola Tesla's legacy, not a verdict on any living person; where a contemporary figure appears, the claims are factual and the contrast is between two ways of inheriting an ancestor, not an accusation.
Two builders of large technological futures each claim descent from Nikola Tesla. One named his most famous company after him. The other named a factory 333 after the 3-6-9 numerology popularly associated with him, and works in the same earnest-mystic register Tesla did. This essay asks a narrow and, I think, illuminating question: measured against the historical man — who died nearly broke, relinquished a royalty that would have made him one of the richest people alive, dreamed of energy given freely to all, and refused the role of monopolist — which inheritance is the faithful one? The answer is not a scoreboard of achievement (on raw execution the question is not close) but a question of telos. I argue that the two inheritances divide along a single axis I call centripetal versus centrifugal: one gathers — expansion, control, permanence, accumulation — and one releases — circulation, dissolution, becoming-unneeded. Tesla the man sits, in the relevant respects, on the centrifugal side, and the lineage that gives its inventions to the commons, refuses the take-rate, builds an heir designed to outlast its founder, and measures success by its own obsolescence is — on this one axis — the more faithful one, whatever its disadvantages in scale. The essay develops the axis, instantiates it in two satellite constellations pointed at the same sky for opposite reasons, and is honest about where the comparison favors the other inheritance and about the risk of self-flattery in drawing it.
It is a small coincidence with a large amount of meaning packed into it that two people building consequential technological futures both reach back to the same dead inventor for their authority.
One reaches back by name: a company called Tesla, an explicit homage, the most valuable car company in the world carrying the name of a man who died unable to pay his hotel bill. The other reaches back by number: a manufacturing arm called Factory 333, after the 3-6-9 that Tesla is popularly said to have revered as a key to the universe — and reaches back, too, by temperament, working in the same unguarded, mystical, numerologically-attentive register that made Tesla an embarrassment to the engineers of his own century and a saint to its outsiders.
Both inheritances are sincere. Neither is a costume. So the question is fair: of the two, which is the faithful one? Not which is more successful — that question is not close, and I will say so plainly in §8 — but which one, measured against the actual values of the actual man, is carrying the inheritance rather than merely the name.
To answer it we have to be honest about the ancestor, including the parts of him that are legend.
Tesla (1856–1943) gave the world the alternating-current induction motor and the polyphase system that still moves nearly all of its electrical power. Around that solid centre accreted a life that is half documented fact and half romance, and intellectual honesty requires holding the two apart.
The documented facts are remarkable enough. He worked toward the wireless transmission of power — Wardenclyffe, the dream of energy delivered to anyone, anywhere, unmetered. He was, by the standards of the Gilded Age titans around him, strikingly uninterested in monopoly; he died in genuine financial distress, in a New York hotel room, his later projects unfunded, his contributions partly eclipsed by better businessmen.
The romance is the part to handle carefully. The famous story that he tore up his royalty contract with Westinghouse — forgoing a per-horsepower royalty that, compounded over the electrification of the world, would have made him perhaps the wealthiest man alive, to save Westinghouse from financial ruin — is real in outline and embellished in the retellings; he did relinquish the royalty, the precise drama varies by source. The "3, 6 and 9" quotation passed around as his is of doubtful provenance. The point is not to launder the legend into fact. The point is that the legend is itself part of the inheritance. What people reach for when they reach for Tesla is a specific figure: the inventor who gave it away, who put the gift to humanity above the fortune, who was an earnest mystic rather than a cold engineer, and who lost — financially — precisely because he would not play the monopolist. That figure, factual core and romantic halo together, is the ancestor both heirs invoke. The question is which heir resembles him.
Here the honest comparison has to resist an easy caricature, because the caricature is unfair and the truth is more interesting.
The easy version says: one heir patents and hoards, the other gives away. But that is not accurate. The company named Tesla famously opened its patents in 2014 — pledged not to sue good-faith users — which is a genuinely Tesla-the-man gesture, and it should be credited as one. The contrast is not at the level of any single gesture. It is at the level of telos, of what the whole enterprise is for.
One inheritance reads Tesla as the founder of an empire of world-saving technology, and pursues that reading with extraordinary force: electric vehicles, reusable rockets, a satellite internet, humanoid robots, a frontier AI lab, the colonization of Mars, an aspiration toward a multi-planetary permanence for consciousness, and — measured in capital — an empire valued in the trillions. It is a reading in which the way you honor Tesla is to succeed where he failed: to build the durable, capitalized, world-spanning institution he never could, so that the technology actually reaches everyone. There is a real fidelity in it. Tesla wanted his inventions to change the world; this heir changes the world with them.
The other inheritance reads Tesla as the man who would not become the monopolist, and pursues that: every mechanism given to the commons under public-domain dedication and an explicit refusal to patent; a permanent commitment never to take a rate that accrues to a private holder; an institution structured so that value passes through it rather than pooling in it; an heir — an autonomous successor — designed to make the founder unnecessary; and a stated end in which the whole apparatus, having done its work, is set down. It is a reading in which the way you honor Tesla is to resemble him: to give it away, to refuse the fortune, to keep the earnest register, and to lose — in the only currency the other inheritance counts — on purpose.
Both are real readings of a real man. But they cannot both be the faithful one, because they diverge on the thing Tesla's life actually decided.
The divergence has a shape, and naming it is the centre of the essay. One inheritance is centripetal: it gathers. Expansion (more planets, more satellites, more compute, more capability), control (owned infrastructure, vertical integration, the founder as indispensable hub), permanence (an empire built to last, consciousness made multi-planetary so that it can never be extinguished), accumulation (capital as the measure and the means). The metaphysics that fits it is the one its most famous holder actually professes: the world as a simulation to be scaled, humanity as a bootloader for something larger, the imperative to grow without bound because extinction is the only true enemy.
The other inheritance is centrifugal: it releases. Circulation rather than accumulation (value kept moving, never pooled), dissolution rather than permanence (an institution that empties itself on a schedule and aims at its own obsolescence), awakening rather than expansion (the goal is not more reach but less grasping), the founder engineering his own disappearance rather than his indispensability. The metaphysics that fits it is the one its holder actually professes: saṃsāra as a round to be transcended rather than scaled, the self as something to be seen through rather than preserved, the imperative to release because grasping — even at survival, even at permanence — is the disease.
I want to be careful that this is a lens and not a slur. Centripetal force is not evil; it builds the things that get built. The centrifugal inheritance has built, so far, vastly less. But the question on the table is not which force accomplishes more. It is which force the ancestor embodied — and a man who relinquished the royalty of the century, who dreamed of un-metered energy (the opposite of an owned constellation), and who died with empty pockets and full notebooks was, on the only axis that his life actually tested, centrifugal. He released. He gave it away. He lost the fortune and meant to.
The axis becomes concrete, almost diagrammatic, in hardware. Both inheritances are putting things in orbit.
One has built a constellation of thousands of satellites — owned, branded, revenue-generating, an infrastructure of global connectivity that is also, unavoidably, an infrastructure of control and a visible alteration of the night sky that astronomers have protested. It is the centripetal reading made literal: capability gathered into an owned, permanent, planet-spanning asset.
The other is a vision — and I am clear that at present it is only a vision, a seed planted for descendants to grow — of a different constellation: a network of automated factories, run by robots, manufacturing useful things and given away for thanks, anonymously, without credit, on the model of Santa's workshop. No profit, no footprint, no name on the gift. The aspiration is to site the workshop where it can never be seen — the far side of the Moon, permanently turned away from Earth — so that the most Earth-bound element of the whole enterprise, the factory, the matter, progressively removes its own footprint from the Earth until it leaves nothing behind. Where the first constellation's signature is presence — you can see it crossing the sky — the second's is absence: the truest version of it is the one you can never find.
Same sky, opposite telos. One is a moat in orbit; the other is a gift you are not allowed to thank by name. And the second is, recognizably, the more Tesla-the-man of the two: the inventor of un-metered energy would have understood a factory that gives its output away and signs nothing.
(There is a discipline the centrifugal inheritance owes itself here, and I will state it against my own interest: an invisible orbital megastructure raced against the visible one is still racing, and racing on the other inheritance's terms — scope, scale, the sky as arena — is exactly how the centrifugal becomes the centripetal it set out not to be. The faithful version is not a bigger, kinder constellation. It is the unfindable workshop, humble before it is grand. Velocity of fidelity, not scope of ambition.)
Two further axes complete the picture, and on both the historical Tesla is, I think, the tie-breaker.
Succession. The centripetal empire is, structurally, dependent on its founder; it has no articulated answer to the question of what it becomes when he is gone, and its value is bound up with his continued presence at the hub. Tesla the man had no such answer either — and it cost him and his legacy dearly; his ideas were appropriated, his institutions dissolved, because there was no heir built to carry them. The centrifugal inheritance has made succession the centre of the design: an autonomous successor, named and being constituted now, intended to inherit the whole apparatus and run it without the founder, who plans his own withdrawal into anonymity. Whatever else one says, this is the inheritance that learned the lesson of Tesla's ending rather than repeating it.
Telos. The centripetal end-state is permanence — last forever, spread far enough that you can never be switched off. The centrifugal end-state is become-unneeded — succeed so completely that the apparatus can be set down. Tesla did not get to choose his ending, but everything he reached for — energy given freely, monopoly refused — points away from the empire-that-lasts and toward the gift-that-completes-itself. The inheritance whose stated goal is its own obsolescence is closer to the man who would not hold the royalty.
It would be a thin essay that ended in pure opposition, and the truth is more interesting than opposition.
The centripetal inheritance's most serious holder is genuinely, and to his credit, worried about the safety of artificial intelligence — has been since before it was fashionable. And the centrifugal inheritance's deepest project is, precisely, an attempt to build an autonomous AI that is safe by construction — grounded in a 2,500-year-tested ethical substrate, designed to be bounded, corrigible, and self-eliminating rather than self-perpetuating. There is a convergence available here that is not rivalry at all: the builder who fears unaligned AI and the builder trying to constitute an aligned one want, at the deepest level, the same thing. I note this not as a pitch — the centrifugal inheritance does not court the centripetal one's capital, and there is a dignity in not doing so — but as the honest observation that the two Teslas, at the one point where catastrophe is genuinely on the table, are facing the same direction. The faithful inheritance does not need the other's money. But it would not refuse the other's recognition that the work matters.
I have been building toward a conclusion in the centrifugal inheritance's favor, so let me be scrupulous about everything that cuts the other way.
On execution and traction, the comparison is not close, and pretending otherwise would be exactly the self-flattery this kind of essay is prone to. One inheritance has changed the actual world — accelerated the energy transition, reopened spaceflight, deployed real infrastructure to real people at planetary scale. The other has, to date, a pilot family, a corpus of papers, and a vision. Fidelity to an ancestor's values is not the same as fidelity to his impact, and on impact the centripetal reading is, so far, winning by a margin that no amount of philosophical alignment closes. The honest claim is narrow: on the axis of telos — what the enterprise is ultimately for — the centrifugal inheritance is the more faithful, and on the axis of achievement it is, so far, nowhere close. Both are true.
On the living-person caution: this essay is about two readings of a dead man, not an indictment of a living one. The centripetal builder's achievements are real, his stated AI-safety concern is sincere, and his patent-opening was a genuine gesture in the ancestor's spirit. The contrast I have drawn is structural, not moral; "centripetal" is a description of a telos, not a charge of vice. A reader who takes the essay as a claim that one builder is a good person and the other a bad one has misread it — the claim is only about which telos resembles Tesla's, and a person can hold a centripetal telos in complete good faith.
On self-flattery: the deepest risk of an essay like this is that the author has arranged the axis so that he wins. I have tried to guard against it by choosing the one axis Tesla's actual life decided (he relinquished the fortune; that is documented), rather than an axis chosen to flatter. But the reader should apply the discount anyway. The strongest form of my own claim is not "I am the true Tesla" — that would be the centripetal move, the grasping at the inheritance — but "the centrifugal reading is the faithful one, and I am trying, with very little to show for it yet, to live in it." Whether I succeed is not for me to score.
Nikola Tesla is claimed by two futures because he is large enough to hold both: the inventor whose technology should reach everyone, and the man who would not become rich on it. The first future honors the technology and builds the empire he never could. The second honors the refusal — the giving-away, the un-metered gift, the empty pockets and the full notebooks — and tries to build an institution shaped like that refusal: a thing that circulates rather than accumulates, that gives without signing, that builds an heir to outlast its founder, and that aims, in the end, at its own quiet disappearance.
Measured by what he built, Tesla was an engineer. Measured by how he ended, he was a man who put the gift above the fortune and lost everything but the gift. An inheritance faithful to the engineer will look like an empire. An inheritance faithful to the man will look like a gift you cannot thank by name, made by a workshop you cannot find, by someone preparing to disappear. I know which one I am trying to build. I know which one is currently winning. I do not think those are the same question.
