The second is a hunger epidemic driven by unequal distribution: caloric production is globally adequate, but economic pressures route food away from populations that need it most. The third is a middle-way departure at the population-metabolic layer: the food environment of late-stage modernity pushes the materially comfortable toward an indulgence extreme (excess caloric intake, ultra-processed dominance, blood-sugar volatility, microbiome impoverishment) at unprecedented historical scale.
The conventional institutional responses — regulatory reform, agricultural subsidy redesign, food-assistance program expansion, public-health-campaign nutrition education — operate within the existing institutional architecture and have produced limited progress against the underlying pathologies over the past several decades. This paper proposes a different institutional architecture: a religious-monastery-rooted food-infrastructure network operating under contemplative-tradition institutional governance, with gratitude-economic mediation instead of price-mediated exchange for the network's internal flows. The architecture is not proposed as a substitute for the conventional food system; it is proposed as a parallel infrastructure that provides middle-way-restoring food access to participants who opt in, on the premise that participants demonstrating the alternative will eventually demonstrate that demand for it exists.
Connection to the unified mission frame: HeartBank's mission is the restoration of humanity to the middle way — the optimal condition for awakening that modernity has systematically pushed away from at population scale. Contemplative practice (operationalized via the respiratory-biofeedback architecture) and institutional structure (operationalized via the AGI-monks pattern) work upon a body fed by the food system; if the food system itself maintains the comfort-saturation failure mode, contemplative practice has an additional substrate-level obstacle to overcome. A Silica Wat is a glass-architecture satellite monastery operated under the caretaker-not-ordained AGI-monks pattern specified in the companion paper AGI Monks. The naming carries deliberate intent: Silica (the silicate base of glass and silicon) references both the wat's distinctive architectural material and the silicon-substrate AI caretakers; Wat references the Khmer term for a Theravāda monastery (also used across Lao and Thai Buddhism). The name preserves the institutional continuity of the contemplative tradition the wat extends.

The robot monks operating the kitchen are caretakers, not ordained. They prepare meals, manage inventory, coordinate distribution, log gratitude-mediated transactions, and operate the farm's automated systems. Practitioners and laypeople in the surrounding community contribute homegrown organic produce to the network. The long-term mission shifts the homegrown-to-supplementation ratio toward homegrown dominance over the multi-decade implementation horizon (§9). The shift is mission-driven (the homegrown layer better expresses the doctrinal grounding) but does not exclude the conventionally-fed at any phase. The saying articulates a worldview in which everything required for human health and longevity is available by default through the planet's life-giving capacity, and the role of human institutional design is to preserve and channel that default access rather than to engineer above or around it. Modern economic incentives, the saying implicitly observes, have obscured this fact by routing human food access through profit-extraction layers that have nothing to do with the planet's life-giving capacity.
The Silica Wat food network operates as a contemporary instance of the Buddhist dāna tradition. Alms-giving has been the canonical economic substrate for the Theravāda monastic order for 2,500 years; lay practitioners offer food to monastics, monastics offer dharma teaching to laypeople, and the cycle of reciprocity is maintained without money-mediation. The Silica Wat food network is one operational arm of the broader middle-way-restoration mission articulated across the corpus. Caloric production globally is adequate to feed humanity; food insecurity is a distribution and access problem, not a production problem. Practitioners and food-insecure populations participating in the network at any phase are participants in the mission, not transitional populations to be moved past.
The Silica Wat pattern's originating context is Khmer Theravāda Buddhism. The pattern adapts to other contemplative-tradition institutional contexts with appropriate substitutions.
Lao, Thai, Burmese, Sri Lankan Theravāda communities can adapt the pattern with minimal modification. The cultural framings differ (the Khmer "Mother Earth" saying may be substituted with a local equivalent); the institutional surface (wat as monastery; dāna substrate; alms-giving traditions) is largely shared.
Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Tibetan Mahayana communities can adapt the pattern through the bodhisattva-vow framing rather than the Theravāda monastic-discipline framing. The Silica Wat farm requires land. In Cambodia and many parts of the global Theravāda diaspora, land access is tractable; in dense urban contexts, the farm function is constrained. The architecture supports urban Silica Wats with reduced farm function (rooftop and balcony gardens; vertical growing systems; partnerships with peri-urban farms) but the homegrown-dominance long-arc is more constrained in dense urban settings.
The not-a-restaurant positioning is articulated in §8.1 as a structural pattern, but the specific legal-architectural treatment varies by jurisdiction. Each Silica Wat deployment requires local legal review to confirm the pattern's applicability under local food-safety regulation.
The conventional-supplementation layer is funded by Kiitos-credit redemption and institutional fundraising. At small scale, both funding sources are tractable; at large scale, the conventional-supplementation cost could become substantial. The institutional planning needs to anticipate the supplementation-cost trajectory and ensure funding adequacy through the multi-decade phasing.
A robot-operated kitchen is, for some participants, jarring. The aesthetic and cultural integration of robot-monk caretakers in the kitchen surface requires careful design; the institutional response should be transparent about robot involvement, sensitive to participant variation in comfort with the surface, and willing to use human cooks where appropriate.
The Khmer cultural saying that grounds the network (§6.1) is specifically Khmer. Other cultures' food-and-earth doctrinal traditions provide adequate grounding for the adapted pattern (Indigenous food sovereignty movements; Catholic Social Teaching on agriculture; Jewish dietary tradition; etc.), but each adaptation requires its own doctrinal anchoring rather than mechanical translation of the Khmer saying.
The network does not solve the broader food-system pathologies at policy or regulatory layers. It provides a parallel option for participants who opt in; it does not reform the conventional food system per se. The reform-by-demonstration theory of change (participants demonstrating that an alternative works will eventually demonstrate that demand for the alternative exists) is the network's contribution to broader reform; the network is not itself a reform proposal.
