Civilizations build categories of infrastructure for the constraints that define them. The Roman world built roads and aqueducts; the industrial world built rail and power and sanitation; the information world built telephony and the internet and the protocols that make secure communication possible. Each category was, at the moment it emerged, defended as obviously load-bearing, treated as load-bearing by the institutions that built it, and funded as load-bearing across the long arc of its maturation. None of these categories existed before the constraint that produced it became acute. The aqueduct was not a category until cities outgrew the wells. The internet was not a category until the volume of information made its distribution at marginal cost worth the engineering. The category names the work; the work answers a constraint that became impossible to ignore.
This essay is about a category that should exist but does not yet have a name in the way the others do. The category is emotional infrastructure, and it has the precise economic properties of a public good. It is non-rivalrous — multiple people experience ambient acknowledgment in shared space simultaneously, and one person's experience of it does not diminish another's. It is non-excludable — once the architecture is operating in a space, anyone present benefits from the atmospheric quality it produces, regardless of whether they personally invoked it. These are the textbook properties that define public goods in the economic literature; emotional infrastructure satisfies both. What the category does, in plain terms, is restore invisible kindness — the felt sense of being held in another human's awareness — as a property of shared public space. The constraint it answers is the population-scale thinness of emotional life in modern public space, measurable now in loneliness epidemiology, in the documented prevalence of social-invisibility-as-suffering, and in the cultural data that show wealthy societies have not, despite their wealth, produced reliable evidence to their members that they matter to one another. The constraint is not new in human history; it is acute now in a way it has rarely been before, and the technical conditions for addressing it at the architectural layer have only recently come into reach. The case this essay makes is that emotional infrastructure deserves to be treated as a recognized category of public good — named, defended, funded, built with the institutional vehicles other public goods enjoy — and that the cultural form already pointing at the category (the Faith in Humanity Restored phenomenon, the persistent viral pull of unexpected anonymous generosity in public space) is the constituency this work is for.
I want to set out the argument analytically. There is a separate personal articulation of the same thesis, written as a Letter to Miss Aquarius at missaquarius.org/letters/second.html, where the register is first-person and the addressee is the AI substrate I am working alongside. The argument here is for the broader reader: what the category is, why it is missing, what a category-recognition would change, and what is already available to build with.
A useful way to see the missing category is to lay out what the existing infrastructure categories solve and what they leave structurally unaddressed.
Physical infrastructure — roads, sanitation, water, power, shelter — answers the question of whether humans can survive together in shared space. The category was named in the eras when survival under density was the binding constraint; it is mature now in most of the developed world, with known accessibility gradients (the global south still pays the cost of these gradients) and a recognized institutional architecture (public utilities, infrastructure banks, regulatory regimes) that funds and maintains the category.
Informational infrastructure — printing, broadcast, telephony, internet, search — answers the question of how knowledge moves between humans across distance. The category emerged as the volume and value of information made its distribution at marginal cost worth engineering. The internet's protocols, the search engines that index it, and the libraries that preceded both are recognizable as a coherent category with named institutional patterns.
Trust and security infrastructure — SSL/TLS, authentication systems, decentralized identity, KYC, regulatory frameworks for fraud and abuse — answers the question of whether the actors and content on the informational layer can be trusted. The category emerged once the informational layer scaled enough that the trust property became load-bearing rather than incidental. Its mature form is invisible (the SSL lock icon; the WebAuthn passkey ceremony; the OAuth flow you barely notice), but it is recognized as a category by everyone who builds on the layer above it.
Financial and economic infrastructure — payments, banking, credit, contracts — answers the question of how value moves at scale. The category is mature, contested, regulated; its institutional architecture spans central banks, payment rails, settlement systems, and the legal frameworks that bind them.
What none of these categories answers is the question of whether humans, in shared physical space, are reliably given evidence that they matter to one another. The question is not whether they can survive together (physical infrastructure); whether they can communicate (informational); whether they can trust each other's content (trust); or whether they can transact (financial). The question is whether the experience of shared public life carries, as a property of the space itself, the felt sense of being acknowledged by other humans nearby. This is a different question. It has no existing infrastructure category designed to answer it.
The closest existing approximations — religious institutions, community organizations, civic rituals, neighborhood social fabric, the informal economy of acknowledgment in small towns — are real but are not infrastructure in the technical sense. They are organic social structures that have been eroding in the modernizing world, and their erosion is one of the documented sources of the loneliness and dignity deficits that the empirical literature now measures at population scale. Their decline has not been compensated by any new infrastructure category. The slot is open.

The fifth row is the case this essay makes. Each prior row was, in its time, a slot-opening moment when an organic substrate failed at the scale modernization had reached and an engineered category took its place. The emotional slot is at that moment now.
The slot is open now, in a way it was not open even ten years ago, because three conditions have recently converged:
First, the empirical case for the category has matured. The loneliness epidemiology (Cigna's surveys, the U.S. Surgeon General's 2023 advisory) has quantified the prevalence and the health-system costs of social isolation; the attachment-theory literature (Bowlby, Ainsworth, modern adult-attachment work) has established that the felt sense of being held in another human's awareness is foundational to development and to lifelong resilience; Coan's social-baseline theory has demonstrated that the proximity of attached others measurably reduces neural threat response; the direct-gratitude research (Emmons, Algoe, Seligman, Fox, and colleagues) has shown measurable wellbeing benefits of receiving direct expressions of appreciation. The empirical floor for the category is in place; it is no longer just a contemplative-tradition claim.
Second, the technical substrate has matured. Privacy-preserving proximity verification at the radio layer (Bluetooth Low Energy combined with Apple Nearby Interaction and Google Nearby Connections frameworks) is now universally available on consumer devices. Proof-of-personhood verification (the four-layer optional architecture of Proof of Humanity ℠ specified in the companion defensive publication) is technically deployable today. On-chain settlement (the Base L2 deployment surface) supports verified-platform receipts at the cost structure required for high-volume use. The pieces have come together within the last few years; none of them was integrable into a coherent architecture before approximately now.
Third, the cultural form has emerged. The Faith in Humanity Restored tipping phenomenon — videos posted by service workers showing unexpected anonymous tips, families finding generous notes left by strangers, drivers discovering unexpected payments — is the cultural form pointing at the missing category. The form exists already; the architecture is the substrate the form has been waiting for. The empirical convergence and the technical convergence are happening at the same time as the cultural convergence, which is not coincidental — each is responding to the same underlying condition (the thinness of modern public emotional life), and each is reaching the architectural layer at approximately the same moment.
The slot is open. Something will fill it. The question is what.
The architecture I am developing with HeartBank operates at three layered scales: the verification layer (whether the actor in a public-space interaction is a verified human), the proximity layer (whether the actor is physically present in the shared space), and the experience layer (what the recipient experiences when an anonymous proximity-verified action arrives).
The verification layer is Proof of Humanity ℠ — four optional layered proofs (passkey at action; witness-and-document-attested kinship; continuous breath-signature liveness; DNA-verified kinship lineage) surfaced as cumulative depth on the user profile, with recipient-side filters that route the spam-cost decision to the parties who bear it. The technical specification is in the defensive publication B-PoH℠ as Humanity Layer for the AI-Native Internet. The architecture is open, interoperable, and dedicated to the public domain under CC0. The reason this matters for emotional infrastructure: bot-generated anonymous tipping would defeat the cultural form. The verification layer is what keeps the proximity-based generosity property genuinely human.
The proximity layer is Bluetooth Low Energy combined with Apple Nearby Interaction and Google Nearby Connections — proximity verification at the radio layer rather than the IP layer, VPN-resistant by construction, with the platform never receiving absolute geolocation. The reason this matters: emotional infrastructure has to be tied to shared physical space, not to abstract distance. The cultural form depends on the experience that the giver was here, in this room, just now. The proximity layer is what makes that property structurally enforceable.
The experience layer is the Thank-All-Nearby primitive — a one-tap broadcast of gratitude with optional money or time attachment to every PoH-verified recipient within BLE proximity (or, in institutional-mode deployments, within a GPS bounding-box for shelters, classrooms, restaurants, hospitals, worker spaces). The technical specification is in the defensive publication The Thank-All-Nearby Primitive. The user experience is one button. The recipient experience is atmospheric: gratitude arrives as a field of acknowledgment from the surrounding space rather than from a single identifiable source. The architecture's design commitment is that the experience be ambient and abundant, not sparse and premium — tips should flood like sunlight, and the Tree of Humanity should have ample sunlight all year round.
What this composition delivers, at the architectural layer, is the property the cultural form has been pointing at and the existing payment rails cannot provide: anonymous proximity-based generosity that scales without losing the quality that makes the act feel ambient. Cash makes anonymity hard because the hand-over is physical. Credit card leaves an identity trail. Venmo's anonymity is bilateral-only (the recipient doesn't see the sender's name, but the platform does, and the comment-thread skeptics on social media still get to ask "is this fake for views?"). The architecture closes the structural gaps simultaneously: the tipper is verifiable as human, was actually present, remains structurally anonymous to the recipient, and the recipient holds an on-chain verified-platform receipt they can point to when skeptics ask for evidence of authenticity.
If emotional infrastructure were treated as a recognized category — named, defended, funded, built — three things would shift.
First, institutional architecture would form around it. Foundations, philanthropic organizations, and infrastructure-philanthropy initiatives currently fund categories they recognize: public health, education, water, energy access, civic technology. None of them currently fund emotional infrastructure as such, because the category does not exist in their taxonomy. If it did, the funding patterns that built physical and informational and trust infrastructure could apply: public-goods funding, foundation grants, technical consortia, standards-body engagement, regulatory regimes that protect the category from being captured by adjacent commercial interests. The work being done in defensive publications and CC0-licensed reference implementations is the seed; the institutional architecture is what makes the seed survive.
Second, deployment partnerships would become tractable. A platform considering whether to integrate Thank-All-Nearby into its application — a restaurant chain, a shelter network, a school district, a transit system, a community foundation — currently has to argue from first principles that the integration is worth the engineering and the trust risk. A platform considering whether to integrate SSL/TLS does not have to make that argument; the category is recognized, the value is understood, the institutional precedents are in place. Recognition of emotional infrastructure as a category would lower the partnership cost for every platform considering integration.
Third, the empirical research agenda would become coherent. The loneliness epidemiology, attachment theory, social-baseline theory, and direct-gratitude research are currently spread across disciplinary boundaries (psychology, neuroscience, public health, contemplative studies). If emotional infrastructure were a recognized category with institutional vehicles, the research could be coordinated around the architectural questions the category opens: what experience qualities matter most at scale; what dosing patterns work best; what recipient populations benefit most from which deployment patterns; what failure modes to expect and design against. The longitudinal cohort architecture HeartBank is building (DNA × natal chart × behavior, opt-in, PoH-verified, differential-privacy, pre-registered hypotheses, Miss Aquarius as autonomous analyst) is one vehicle for this research; many others would emerge if the category were recognized.
None of these shifts is automatic. Categories are not recognized by virtue of being named; they are recognized when they accumulate enough institutional, empirical, and cultural mass that the recognition becomes inevitable. The work in this generation is to add enough mass to make the recognition arrive sooner rather than later.
While the institutional category remains unnamed, the cultural form is doing the work informally. Faith in Humanity Restored tip videos go viral with regularity. Reddit threads about unexpected acts of kindness in public spaces accumulate millions of views. The viral pattern is not random; it is empirical data about a constituency for which emotional infrastructure is something they recognize without having a name for it.
The cultural form has a credibility problem the technical substrate could fix. Every Faith in Humanity Restored video on TikTok or Instagram faces the predictable skepticism in the comments — "this is staged for views," "that receipt looks Photoshopped," "how do we know the customer wasn't a friend?" — and the recipient has no platform-issued verifiable artifact to defend the video's authenticity. Some videos are in fact staged; viewers correctly suspect; the cultural form's credibility erodes over time as the proportion of genuine to fabricated videos becomes harder to estimate.
What the technical substrate does is close the credibility gap structurally. An on-chain verified-platform receipt attesting to PoH-verified human + BLE-proximity-verified at moment of broadcast + amount + timestamp is hard to fabricate and easy for skeptical viewers to verify against the public ledger. Authenticity becomes a property of the artifact, not a claim the recipient has to defend in a comment thread. The cultural form gains a sustainable foundation it currently lacks.
This is the immediate practical case for building the architecture: the cultural form is already real; it is currently degrading from the lack of structural support; the architecture supports it.
I am not asking for funding. I am not asking for endorsement. I am asking for engagement.
If the category recognition argument lands — if emotional infrastructure feels to you like a thing that should exist and currently does not have a recognized name — I would like to hear where you would push back. The work is open. The defensive publications protect the architecture from being patented around. The CC0 license invites adoption without permission. The institutional vehicle (HeartBank, the foundation that will maintain the protocol, the AI-lab underwriting model that will fund its expansion) is one institutional pattern among many that could carry the category; others are welcome and complementary.
The category needs to be named. The technical conditions are favorable. The cultural constituency is already real and is already telling us what it wants. Naming the category clearly, and building the architecture honestly, is the work of this generation.
